My Jr. Year of college I took a class on the book of Hebrews as one of my Bible electives. Chapters 3 & 4 of this book talk about God's Sabbath Rest. I questioned what that meant as I took that class. Ok... great... heaven will be a rest... but I kept thinking there was more to it than than... why over and over in those couple of chapters does it continually talk about entering God's rest?
I didn't think much more of it until I wasn't a carefree college student anymore. It has become increasingly apparent to me that I
am in a war. I have known for most of my life that we are in a spiritual battle, but I feel it now. So, if I am in a war, what does that make me? A warrior. Like it or not (and I don't like it very much...the word warrior just doesn't exactly conjure up ideas of femininity, class or anything pink...), if I'm in a war, a warrior I am. However, I'm not a very good one right now. Weak, broken, with an incomprehensible amount to learn, my vision has been blurred and my purpose muddied.
I read a line in my Beth Moore Bible Study on Esther today that really hit home.
"Some of us with little previous battle experience have no idea why God is allowing us to go through such difficult times in a place we thought was His will. He's trying to make warriors out of us (188)."
The difficult circumstances of the last couple of years have definitely created desperation in my life. This desperation has lead me back to the Word and God has enlightened it in brand new ways. For example, I've always known that we're to "put on the full armor of God" and that the Sword of the Spirit- our offensive weapon - is the Word of God (Eph 6). However, how many times have I taken that out of the figurative/spiritual/bible-y realm and utilized it? Mmm... in 17 years of being a Christian... 2 times now. And they have been in the last few months, which have been some of the hardest of my life. The quote above is so true.
Let me tell you what has happened when I have read or quoted the living and active Word of God that is sharper than any double edged sword that penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit.... (Heb 4:12)
1. Speaking the words outloud helped my spirit to ingest them in a different way than reading in my head. Faith began to arise in me and the more faith arose, the more scriptures I thought of, the more encouraged I became, the more grateful I was and confident I was that the words He speaks are truth. (Faith does come by hearing the Word of God)
2. The first of these times, I cried out to God with desperation and determination, saying things like God, I know that in all things you work to the good of those who love you and are called according to your purpose Rm 8:28 I know that you are making streams in the desert IS 44:3, that I can count it all joy when facing trials of various kinds because I know that the testing of my faith develops perserverance and perserverance must finish it's work so that I may be mature and complete not lacking anything (Jm 1), and I know that even though I can't see it, you are working here because you will never leave or forsake me, etc.) That very day I saw a breakthrough in a situation that was hard and seemingly impossible.
I listened to a Joyce Meyer CD a while back on the power of the tongue... she talked about how angels are sent to minister to the heirs of salvation (Heb1:14) and how angels obey the word of God (the reference was a scripture in Psalms that I can't remember right now). Putting those two scriptures together she talked about how when we speak the word of God, angels are released to do what his Word says. She said it much better than that, but it does seem to fall in line with the fact that the Word of God is our spiritual sword. So I decided to try it. Is their any harm in speaking God's Word aloud? It can only help right? And it did and it does and it will.
Anyways, after 17 years I think I am sort of in some way beginning to get it. We aren't just to read the Bible everyday, or just apply it to our lives (both of those things of course are so important), but we can and should actively use the Word of God as our sword.
Hopefully this isn't a revelation to anyone who might be reading this... but I wanted to share this because I think more of us probably do need to take up our swords and train as warriors. Maybe God will even let my spiritual sword be pink:).
Oh yeah and back to the Sabbath Rest... anyhow... after life hit, and I truly realized I would battle in some way til the day I die, I got real excited about the Sabbath rest God offers. "Let us therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience." Heb 4:11
